The word “Hospice” dates from the 11th century and described a place of refuge for travelers. Today it has evolved to holistic care of individuals at the end of their life journey. Hospice was established as a modern medical practice in the United Kingdom and gained popularity in the United States in the mid 1970s. Hospice services featured an emphasis on the patient and caregiver psychosocial needs, and trained volunteers delivered support services.

Locally, in the mid 1980s “Hospicor”, a dedicated group of volunteers from the United Ministry Church of Aurora, provided support and companionship to the terminally ill in their community. At the same time, Cayuga County for the Aging began to explore the feasibility of Hospice services in our area, and ComforTcare of Cayuga County evolved. Collaboration began between these two palliative care programs, and Hospice of the Finger Lakes received certification from the New York State Health Department in May 1988.

Now 30 years old, Hospice of the Finger Lakes has grown remarkably, providing service to more than 3,700 patients and families in our community. A partial list of agency accomplishments includes: developed a volunteer membership organization “Friends of Hospice” (1996); created Camp Heart’s A’Hoy to expand children’s bereavement services; relocated from shared office space at the “Y” Meeting House in Downtown Auburn to our own building on Corporate Drive (2000); upgraded our web-site; partnered with several annual community fund raising events; received a fully donated “makeover” of our office building (2009); opened Friends of Hospice Thrift Shop at Willard Chapel (2010); established a Pharmacy Reserve Fund (2010); integrated information technology into service delivery; completed a successful recertification and follow-up survey by the Department of Health (2013).
